Condoleezza Rice: Countries like Iran threaten the effectiveness of the global [nuclear] non-proliferation regime

BBC News:The US secretary of state urged Iran to abandon "forever" nuclear weapons ambitions in her speech.

"Countries like Iran threaten the effectiveness of the global [nuclear] non-proliferation regime," Condoleezza Rice said in her maiden speech to the assembly, and she added that the UN Security Council should be ready to intervene if necessary.

She also called for a "lasting revolution of reform" at the UN and supported expanding the Security Council to include Japan.

And she argued that countries with poor human rights should not be allowed to sit on UN committees judging other nations' records.

The three European countries who have been negotiating with Tehran on the nuclear issue - the UK, France and Germany - will be watching Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech closely, the BBC's Pam O'Toole reports.
